The first step to learning how to play poker is understanding the game rules and etiquette. You’ll want to respect your fellow players and dealers, be courteous, and avoid disruptive behavior. It’s also important to understand the various sorts of hands you can have in poker.

After each player is dealt two cards, the betting begins. If you think your hand is good enough to call a bet (or raise it) then you say “call”. If you think you’re going to lose, you can fold.

Once all players have acted on their two cards, the dealer puts three more cards face up on the table that everyone can use, called the flop. Then a fourth card, the turn, is dealt.

After all of the cards have been revealed, the person with the best hand wins the pot. The best possible hand is a royal flush, which consists of the highest-ranking cards in all suits, a straight, or a three-of-a-kind. Other acceptable hands include a full house (three cards of the same rank) and a pair (two cards of the same rank and two unmatched cards). These are called “the nuts”. If you have any of these, then you’re likely to win.
